I was studying in school one day when there was a fire alarm announcement. I immediately thought of the mass media effect. The magic bullet theory is seen as a powerful effect. It states that audiences are passive, we accept what is presented to us. Imagine yourself studying alone in the student lounge when there is an announcement saying that there is fire in the building. What will you do? Your first thought is to pack your stuff and evacuate the building as fast as possible. I am sure everyone else who has heard the announcement would do the same. This proves that in this case, mass media is powerful. Those who have heard the announcement would believe that there is a fire in school and they allow the sources to tell them what to think.
I feel that mass media these days play an important part in our lives. For example, we are influenced by what we watch on TV or what we read in the newspaper. I feel that newspaper these days are propaganda. this may be due to the fact that SPH is controlled partially by the government, as such the news broadcasted is controlled by them.

nah.. when the fire alarm sound off i will jus take it as a hoax and check it out before packing my things.. if its real then i wil go back and pack my things AHHA =D

haha BOMB alarm. well it is true about the powerful effects theory. however, i'm quite certain that since we're more aware of what's going on now as opposed to the people 80 years ago, we would react pretty differently. whenever i hear a fire alarm go off, i carry on doing my things because 10 out of 10 times it is a false alarm...
this leads us to wonder if we've been so jaded by our environment that nothing much surprises us anymore..
if i was the student alone in the student lounge and i heard the fire alarm, i too would go check it out first before grabbing my things and rushing off hahaha! so i think in todays context, the magic bullet theory doesn't really hold true, perhaps the moderate effects theory is more realistic?
i agree with nic. i won't follow the instructions immediately. but i'll go and check first.
and yes. i'd think of more of the moderate theory rather than the magic bullet theoryy..
In the world press freedom audit we are no. 111 out of 150 countries. Mr L has been using the mass media to only feed us news that they want us to hear about. Quite sad.
